Welcome to the Central Alabama Police K9 Association (CAPK9) website. CAPK9 is an organization made up of police officers, canine handlers, supervisors, and administrators from throughout the State of Alabama. Our group consists of law enforcement from municipal, county, and state agencies working toward a common goal of training standards and practices for police canines within the State of Alabama. Please take time to peruse the site and feel free to Contact Us.

You will find links along the left side of your screen to navigate your way around the site.

CAPK9 is committed to providing a quality education program that exceeds expectations. We believe  our intense methods of handler education contribute to the increasing success of our program. The handler school for a single-purpose detection canine is four weeks long, with two written examinations. The handler school for a dual-purpose canine is six weeks long, with four written examinations. A minimum score of 80% is required on all examinations. Additional weekly evaluations are conducted on the handler/canine team, and if acceptable scores are not achieved, written notice is sent to the department head.

Certification is conducted at various locations to simulate realistic situations the team may encounter on the street. Detector dogs must successfully locate fourteen finds at seven locations while being subjected to numerous distractions. While patrol dogs must meet the same standards as the detector dogs, they must also successfully demonstrate the principles of handler protection and officer safety. Handler protection and officer (human and canine) safety are taught and stressed throughout the course. Certification is included in the price of the course.

We guarantee performance upon completion of the course, provided the handler maintains the proper training and documentation taught during the course.
